South University/US 70 District - Eastern New Mexico University and Cannon Meadows 801 Air Force Housing is located 20 minutes from Cannon Air Force Base and contains 4,000 students, Sports Complex, Theatre, Student Center, restaurants, ballrooms, meeting rooms, Barnes and Nobel bookstore, Music Hall, Natatorium, Child Development Center, and Federal Depositorty Library.

La Tienda- A 12,000 square foot former 1960's style supermarket is the only vacant commercial property in the area. Historic Downtown Portales - Historic Downtown Portales is the governmet and professional services center of for aan area the size of Delaware, and an emerging arts and cultural district and high density residential area looking for evening activity.

The Downtown Portales district contains the Nationally Historic Roosevelt County Courthouse, Post Office, City Hall, Library, and Roosevelt County Electrical Cooperative. Retail establishments include fine jewelry and women's clothing, gifts, furniture, western wear, pharmacy, sports clothing, telecom, art, antiques and crafts, 24/7 gym, hardware, and housewares. 

A variety of downtown cafes and restaurants typically cater to a large breakfast and lunch crowd. "Open mike" evening at the Easel and Frame Gallery is an emerging nightime event, and new evening-oriented businesses are welcome and not far behind.

Portales Main Street Inc. is a non-profit group dedicated to enlivening downtown Portales after 5 PM.   The "Alive after Five" program is focused on expanding the vitality of Downtown Portales into the evening hours through regular events such as the Wine Festival, and through proactive efforts to provide select real estate for redevelopment at a nominal cost in exchange for developing vital activity that serves the "after five" crowd.   

Two key development opportunities in Historic Downtown Portales include downtown housing development and the establishment of a restaurant/brew pub.  The Portales Inn is a 35,000 square foot mid-century hotel in perfect structural condition that may be granted to a developer who agrees to provide vibrant mixed-use development in the building. 

North Portales/US 70 - This US highway commercial district stretching from Downtown Portales to Highway 467 includes a number of agricultural and industrial services businesses, car dealerships, a variety of restaurants and fast-food establishments, and Super Wal-mart. 

This stretch of US 70 includes some of the best and remaining vacant highway frontage and larger (above 2,000 square foot) serviceable industrial/commercial buildings in the region.  Many of these buildings require some repair and can be purchased for under $50 per square foot.
