| Portales and Roosevelt County Quality of Life: Overview
The unique small-town atmosphere mixed with big-city convenience gives Portales its outstanding quality of life. In fact, our quality of life is so good, we're one of the highest-ranked small towns in the country, ranking 15th in the nation and 9th in the western United States in overall quality of life (Bizjournals.com).
Portales is a well-rounded community: The economy is strong, traffic is light, the cost of living is moderate, adults are well-educated, and access to big-city attractions is reasonably close. Portales has a quality of life score of 8.96 out of 10--and that's hard to beat! Add into the mix our high income per capita, short commuting times, and low taxes, and you can see why we're regarded as one of the leaders in small-town quality of life. In fact, Portales and Los Alamos were the only two New Mexico cities to be recognized in the top twenty small towns in the country.
Our strong school system and recreational programs, high level of public safety, and the presence of Eastern New Mexico University are key community assets, as are the abundance of civic, faith-based, and school organizations and volunteer groups in Portales. So come see what we're made of!
