| Portales and Roosevelt County Infrastructure: Transportation
Portales is situated in the center of the growing Southwestern market region, with convenient access to North America’s Pacific, Southwest, Midwest, South Central, Gulf Coast, and Rocky Mountain markets. The four-lane US Highway 70 runs through the center of Roosevelt County and Downtown Portales, with direct connections to US Highway 60, Interstate 40, and Interstate 10. One-day ground transportation is available to Phoenix, El Paso/Juarez, Dallas, Oklahoma City, Denver, and Albuquerque.
The Gulf Port of Houston is located 690 miles southeast of Portales, and the Pacific Ocean Port of Long Beach is 1,029 miles to the west by ground transport.
For recreational travel, the ski slopes and resorts of Ruidoso, New Mexico are located just 2.5 hours southwest of Portales. The historic arts community of Santa Fe is situated just over 3 hours northwest, and the city of Albuquerque, with over a million residents, is 3.5 hours northwest of Portales. Located just 90 minutes southeast of Portales via County Road 202 is the dynamic community of Lubbock, Texas, home of Texas Tech University and Medical Center. Lubbock offers "big city" shopping as well as convenient air passenger service to Dallas-Fort Worth Airport. A short 20 minute drive north of Portales is the city of Clovis, home of Clovis Community College and the Hillcrest Park Zoo.
